If you’re using newer, recently released software, chances are it’s 64-bit.
But if you have an app or two that’s old and never been updated, it could be 32-bit. And 32-bit software won’t work on Catalina.Before you upgrade to Catalina, check to see if you have any apps that are 32-bit and need to be upgraded. You can do this with an app from St. Claire Software called Go64. Go64 scans your Mac, and lists whether it’s 64-bit or not. It also provides web links to the app developer’s website so you can check for upgrades. You can get Go64 at.If you don’t want to use a third-party app, you can check your software in the Mac’s Activity Monitor app, which is found in your Mac’s Utilities folder.

To see the size of a specific file or folder, click it once and then press Command-I. To see storage information about your Mac, click the Apple menu in the top-left of your screen. Choose About This Mac and click the Storage tab. For Time Machine backups, it's good to use a drive that has at least twice the storage capacity of your Mac.
